Fanime 2010: Day 1

On Friday, I went as Litchi Faye Ling since I decided to attend the BlazBlue gathering rather than the Vocaloid one, with my logic being that Vocaloid has the most annoying fanbase ever (except for Hetalia, holy cow).

At noon we went to go look for parking. It was a complete nightmare. An attendant even lied to us, saying “all parking places will charge you $18 for all day parking.”

Sam became very irate (understandable, since he had been driving around for a long time) and I became very upset since I felt it was my responsibility to plan better (since I had done all the planning thus far). Derrick tried to calm everyone down, saying it was okay and that we would prepare better next time.

Due to our parking disaster, we missed our first ballroom dancing lesson, but we agreed we’d go the next day.

Due to a stroke of luck, I ran into Skye, with whom I shared a steamy kiss at Anime LA where she was dressed as Noel. She made the cutest school Noel ever! Of course we needed a new kiss photo.

In the crowded hallway, Sam brushed his hand against mine, to which I responded, “What the hell? Did you just try to hold my hand?!” and proceeded to cause a very huge scene. Since I stood out as a very sexy cosplayer, many, many con-goers laughed at Sam and gave him dirty looks.

Sam spent the next few hours ignoring me, which noticeably upset me (“SAAAM STOP BEING MAD AT ME. I’M SO SOOOORRY I’LL HOLD YOUR HAND NOW! PLEASE.”) Derrick chastised me, saying that most people don’t like being bothered when they’re angry with you. He said the best thing to do was to leave Sam alone.

Sam did eventually forgive me, though. Eventually.

The BlazBlue gathering was pretty boring. We all literally gathered in one spot and took a group photo. Yawn. The only exciting part was that BlazBlue creators Toshimichi Mori and Daisuke Ishiwatari were in the crowd and I took photos with them, so it wasn’t a total loss.

Later, I ran into Kelly, whom I met as a fellow Litchi cosplayer at Anime Expo. She was dressed as Yukari from Paradise Kiss and we planned to meet up later.

We later saw the Vocaloid gathering, which was disappointing for the most part (but did have a few very good cosplayers). I don’t know why, but since there are so many different versions of Vocaloids, people think they can start making stuff up for their costumes. Namely, the orange Vocaloid which totally pissed off Derrick. No, you’re not being creative, you’re being WRONG. That’s my two cents, though.

The next part could have potentially ruined the trip for me. Derrick was nice enough to hold all my things for me and ended up dropping my camera. I gasped, but didn’t think much of it.

Later I realized my camera had broken. None of the buttons were working and the lens were stuck in one position, making all photos blurry unless you knew how to manipulate it. Due to the circumstances of the situation, I couldn’t reasonably be angry with Derrick, but it caused tension between us nonetheless.

Sam and Steven tried to cheer me up, saying it could be repaired, or a new one could be bought, but I was distraught since it had been a gift. I tried to distract myself by looking for gifts to buy but my mind constantly wandered back to it, visibly upsetting me.

In a fit of immaturity, I decided to ignore him for the next couple hours. Taking his own advice, he didn’t speak with me either.

We went to the one event we had been looking forward to most (or second most, for me): the FLOW concert. I only knew one of their songs from Eureka Seven, but Sam and Derrick were familiar with their songs from Bleach, Naruto, and Code Geass.

They threw a very good show. They were very enthusiastic and sang well live. Sam and I jumped up and down and danced. I had to hold his hand in order to prevent myself from losing balance (heh). I also had to be careful not to headbang too much, because I remember the pain I felt the days following Warped Tour and Bamboozle.

The concert ended earlier than expected and we decided to head over to the rave early. Bad move. It was nearly empty. I was about to walk out when Derrick suggested a game of Contact. Lots of fun was had and the night was saved. Unfortunately, by the time the rave began filling up, we were spent and decided to head back to our hotel.

Later I spoke with Steven and realized I was being awfully immature and irrational. He said that not only was I being worse than I should, but that I needed to be nicer than usual in order to ensure everyone would have a good time. He pointed out that I had upset Sam and Derrick and that I needed to make up for it.

I hoped the next day would be better.
